Mother had been in stasis, so to speak, while we were on planet. She handled our network, but she wasn't actively operating the ship and maintaining a myriad of life supports that make the ship livable.

Dispersing the system would be wise, but it would mean dispersing parts of herself. She is as much machine as she is a creature or a being.
